Japanese and Overseas Phones, Bands and 5G SA

Why an unlocked overseas phone can still lose coverage, calling or carrier features in Japan, and what to check before inserting a SIM or eSIM.

SIM-free does not mean network-compatibleUnlocking removes a carrier lock. It does not add Japanese bands, VoLTE certification, 5G SA, technical conformity, APN settings or carrier firmware.

Check the exact model number, not only the product name

A phone bought overseas can appear to have the same name as a Japanese model while using different radio hardware and firmware.

CheckWhy it matters
Legal useCheck the Japanese technical-conformity mark (技適). A temporary roaming exception is not permission to use a foreign phone indefinitely with a Japanese SIM.
Exact regional modelCheck the model number, not only the product name. The Japanese, US, European and Asian versions of the same phone can support different bands, eSIMs and functions.
SIM / eSIMThe phone must be unlocked, accept the carrier's SIM/eSIM profile and support the service type.
Voice / VoLTEWorking data does not prove that calls, SMS or emergency calls work. Check the carrier's tested-device list and VoLTE support.
5G and 5G SANR band support alone is insufficient. The plan, SIM/eSIM, approved handset, regional firmware, software and coverage must all support the service.
Japanese functionsOsaifu-Keitai/FeliCa, emergency alerts, carrier mail, voicemail, satellite functions and repair support can differ by region and firmware.

Main frequency bands by carrier

This is a network-side guide, not a guarantee for every area. Match the exact phone model against the carrier's current official band table and tested-device list.

Network4G / LTEBands to prioritize5G NRImportant caution
NTT DOCOMO / ahamoB1 (2.1GHz), B3 (1.7GHz), B19 (800MHz), B21 (1.5GHz), B28 (700MHz), B42 (3.5GHz)Prioritize B1, B3 and especially B19. B19 is important for indoor and rural coverage.n1 / n28 (NR reuse), n78 (3.4–3.7GHz), n79 (4.5GHz), n257 (28GHz)n79 is important on DOCOMO but is missing from many overseas models. DOCOMO's FOMA 3G service ended on 1 April 2026.
au / UQ mobile / povo2.0B1 (2.1GHz), B3 (1.7GHz), B11 (1.5GHz), B18/B26 (800MHz), B28 (700MHz), B41 (2.5GHz), B42 (3.5GHz)Prioritize B1, B3 and B18 or B26. B18/B26 is au's main low-frequency coverage layer.n3 / n28 (NR reuse), n40 (2.3GHz), n41 (2.5GHz), n77/n78 (3.7–4.0GHz), n257 (28GHz)Band support varies by au device and area. A phone may connect to data but still fail au VoLTE if it is not on the tested-device list.
SoftBank / Y!mobile / LINEMOB1 (2.1GHz), B3 (1.7GHz), B8 (900MHz), B11 (1.5GHz), B28 (700MHz), B41 (2.5GHz), B42 (3.5GHz)Prioritize B1, B3 and especially B8. Missing B8 can noticeably reduce indoor and rural coverage.n3 / n28 (NR reuse), n77 (3.4–3.7GHz), n257 (28GHz)A specification sheet can list bands the handset supports even when SoftBank does not use all of them. Confirm both the network table and the exact model.
Rakuten MobileB3 (1.7/1.8GHz), B28 (700MHz platinum band); B18/B26 only in applicable partner-roaming areasFor Rakuten's own network, prioritize both B3 and B28. B18/B26 is useful only where domestic partner roaming remains available.n77 (3.7GHz), n257 (28GHz)Do not treat all bands listed in a handset specification as Rakuten network bands. Check Rakuten's compatible-products list and the current area map.

What each frequency range is used for

FrequencyTypical roleWhat it means when choosing a phone
700 / 800 / 900MHzCoverage bands (often called platinum bands)Signals travel farther and enter buildings more easily. Missing the carrier's main low band often matters more than missing mmWave.
1.5 / 1.7 / 2.1GHzBalanced coverage and capacityWidely used for ordinary LTE/5G coverage and capacity. Several bands are normally combined by carrier aggregation.
2.3–4.5GHzHigh-capacity 4G and Sub-6 5GOffers higher capacity but generally shorter reach than low bands. n79 at 4.5GHz is a notable DOCOMO compatibility point.
28GHz (n257)5G millimetre waveVery high potential speed in limited locations. It is easily blocked and is not a substitute for broad-area bands.

Band support is necessary, but not sufficient

A handset specification shows the bands its radio can receive. It does not prove that the phone supports the carrier's carrier-aggregation combinations, 4G anchor band for 5G NSA, VoLTE profile, emergency calling, eSIM issue or network certification. A phone may show 5G but perform poorly, remain on 4G, or provide data without voice.

Carrier systems and accounts

A Japanese carrier-sold Android phone can include operator configuration, update channels, voicemail settings and an account link such as d account, au ID, SoftBank ID or Rakuten ID. Some apps are optional; others control billing, eSIM reissue, filtering, backup or support. The carrier account is separate from the Google Account or Apple Account.

When changing carrier, remove old carrier billing, confirm subscriptions, export mail if needed, and keep old credentials until the final bill and installments finish. Do not factory-reset before moving eSIM and authenticator access.

5G NSA versus 5G SA

NSA uses a 4G core and 4G anchor together with 5G radio. SA uses a 5G core and can support lower latency, network slicing and other 5G-native functions. SA requires a compatible plan, SIM/eSIM, approved handset, software and SA coverage; matching an NR band alone is not enough.

An overseas variant may lack the carrier profile or certification even when it supports the same NR band. It may connect only by NSA or 4G, and changing an APN cannot add SA or VoLTE support.

Safe buying sequenceChoose the carrier first. Open its tested-device list and official band table, match the exact regional model number, then check technical conformity, VoLTE, eSIM and 5G SA. After activation, test calls, SMS, data and tethering before relying on the phone.
